Traveling? Pack These Apps.

Going somewhere? Not so fast.  We all know the iPhone was created to streamline our lives, so why should travel be any exception?  The truth is, it’s not.  But we know that when you’re rushing to catch your flight, the last thing on your mind is whether you’ve downloaded the right apps (there are much more pressing concerns obviously, like whether you’ve managed to remember your photo ID and packed all your liquids in three-ounce containers).

So we’ve made things easy for you.  Here are a list of all the apps you need on your iPhone or iPad that will help you make it past TSA and onto your plane without so much as a slight jog to the gate.

1. Road Trippin?
You Need: Aha Radio
Cost: Free
Why: You can now keep your favorite talk, sports and music radio stations all on one touch-screen menu.  You can add your Facebook and Twitter icons to the menu to have your feeds read to you while you’re on the go.  Need traffic information or a place to eat? Aha Radio’s got you covered.

2. Shop Smart
You Need: Kayak Plus
Cost: $0.99
Why: Compare flight and hotel availability and costs in one easy place.  Plus, check out pictures and reviews of accommodations before you book them.

3. Book It
You Need: Airbnb
Cost: Free
Why: This app will hook you up with private rentals in 190,000 cities in 190 different countries.  Last minute beach trip? Use the “Find a Place, Tonight!” feature to score last minute deals.  This situation isn’t one-sided either: The “What’s Your Place Worth?” feature will help you get your place on the rental market in a flash.

4. Pack Lightly (Or Not)
You Need: Packing (+TO DO!)
Cost: $0.99
Why: Because forgetting something important is inevitable. But with this app, you can save packing lists for specific types of trips like Beach Trip, European Vacation and Weekend in the City.  Plus, you can keep track of how much each item weighs and how much it costs…so that if your checked baggage is too heavy, you can just sell it.  Kidding.

5. Stay Organized
You Need: TripIt
Cost: Free
Why: Create instant travel iteraries with TripIt – simply enter your plans, then forward all your confirmation emails to plans@tripit.com to have the details stored in the trip’s folder.  Keep everyone in the loop by sharing your trips with people via a variety of social networking platforms.  TripIt will even keep track of the points your earn through your frequent flyer programs.

6. Don’t Miss Your Flight
You Need: FlightTrack
Cost: $4.99
Why: FlightTrack will keep track of all your airline travel vitals in one place.  You can track where your plan is geographically, track delays and gate changes in real-time, and even pick your seat on the plane through FlightTrack’s integrated SeatGuru technology.

7.  Stay Connected
You Need: Postagram
Cost: Free
Why:  Select a picture.  Write a 180-character message.  Choose an address to send it to.  Then the good people at Postagram will print out our personalized post card and send it off to its destination for only $0.99.

8. Don’t Be Stingy
You Need: GlobeTipping
Cost: $0.99
Why: I learned the hard way that tipping in Paris is rude.  Don’t make that mistake.  Download GlobeTipping, learn the local customs, and then use the built-in tip calculator to ensure you give exactly the amount  you intend to.

9. Speak the Lingo
You Need: Jibbigo
Cost: $4.99
Why: Although this app must be downloaded separately for each language at $4.99 a pop, the fact that it can operate without an internet connection is a huge plus. The interface is easy to understand – simply speak into it, and it will speak back to you in the language of your choice.

10. Get Around Like a Local
You Need: HopStop
Cost: Free
Why: Taxis are expensive, but when you’re in a new city, they’re really the only way, right? Wrong. HopStop will get you from point A to point B on public transportation so seamlessly, no one will know you’re not a local.

11. Eat Well
You Need: UrbanSpoon
Cost: Free
Why: Because I sometimes use this restaurant-finder app to decide where to eat in my own hometown.  Simply enter a location, a type of fare, a price range or a meal time and UrbanSpoon will deliver a list of options.  Don’t know what you’re in the mood for?  Use the “Shake” feature to discover something new.

12. Don’t Get Lost
You Need: Everytrail
Cost: Free, although the upgrade is handy for offline/off-the-grid travel
Why: Track your journey, stop at point of interest, take audio tours, save your trails and browse the EveryTrail database of over 400,000 trips made by other users.  You can also share pictures, videos and trip details through the app, Facebook and Twitter.
